Sardis celebrates 150th birthday

Two weekend events are set to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Sardis, Mississippi.
The Sardis Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a fireworks display over Sardis Lake October 8 to kick off the celebration, then follow the next weekend with a day-long Sesqui-Fest Main Street Festival, according to Chamber president Cris Fletcher.
The 30-minute fireworks exhibit will begin at 7 p.m. The fireworks will be shot from the peninsula on the upper lake across from Engineer’s Point and spillway, Fletcher said. Parking will be at the boat ramps, Marina, and along the top of the dam. The entrance to the top of the dam will be from the north (Sardis) entrance with the road one way and parking in the east lane next to the guard rail. The Rangers will start closing through traffic at 5 p.m.
The next Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Main Street Festival (Sesqui-Fest) will offer arts and crafts, games, food, fun and live music. Several bands have been lined up to perform.
