Tigers fall in district play to Tupelo

By Brad Greer
Riding a four-game winning streak and a boat load of momentum, South Panola  opened Region 2-6A play in front of a packed house Tuesday night at Tiger Field, but visiting Tupelo decided to make it a quick game.
Led by Memphis commitment Jason Garrett, eleven strikeout performance, the Golden Wave trounced South Panola 15-1 in five innings to improve to 6-7 on the season while the Tigers saw their record also fall to 6-7. The two teams met again in the second of three meetings night at Tupelo.
Tupelo came out swinging in the top of the first inning as six straight batters reached base before out number one was recorded. The big blow of the inning came as La Bryant Siddell blasted a three-run homer  off Tiger starting pitcher Chase Durham to give the visitors a 5-0 lead.
The Golden Wave put the game away with a nine-run third inning which saw 13 batters come to the plate. Stephen Matthews, two-run single and Siddell’s two-RBI double were key hits in the inning. South Panola did not help its cause by making three errors in the inning.
South Panola scored their lone run in the fourth as Kyle Weaver struck out but reached first base on a passed ball. Zach Hopper followed with a RBI double that broke up the shutout. The Tigers only other hit came on a Durham single in the second.
“Baseball is a game of emotion and I think it was a matter of us getting too pumped up playing in of front of a great crowd at home and after they jump on us right off the bat I don’t think we knew how to handle it,” said South Panola head coach Jake Mills.
Durham absorbed the pitching loss by giving up 11 runs (six earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings. Luke Daniels went the rest of the way, surrendering four runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out four and walking two batters.
“I thought Luke came in and did a pretty good job against a very good hitting Tupelo team. We have put him in some tough spots at times this season and he has found a way to work his way out of them more times than not. He has proven he is someone we can count on to get batters out,” said Mills.

The Tiger Junior Varsity squad suffered its first loss of the season as Tupelo blew open the game with a five-run third inning. South Panola scored two runs in each of the first three innings but committed five errors in the contest.
Chris Brown added a two-run single in the second while Daniels provided a run scoring single in the first. Brayden Locke, John Railey and Ryan McCurdy all registered singles. Brown started the game on the hill and went 2.2 innings before giving way to Justin Bolton who worked the final 1.1 innings in relief.
Locke, Tripp Still, Nathan Herron, Daniels, Blaine Ware and Railey all provided runs.
South Panola travels to Winona today at 11 & 1 p.m.
