OXFORD – After an historic 23-17 victory over Alabama on Saturday, the undefeated Ole Miss Rebels (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) vaulted into the top five of the national football polls Sunday.
Ole Miss is tied for third in the Associated Press poll and jumped to fourth in the USA Today Coaches poll. The No. 3 ranking is the Rebels’ highest since being preseason No. 1 in 1964. The last two times Ole Miss cracked the top five were 2009 and 1970, both at No. 4.
The Rebels were ranked 11th in both polls last week.
Somehow, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are locked in a tie for No. 3 in the AP poll. It’s the first time in history that the two Magnolia state programs are ranked in the top 10 together, much less the top five.
Ole Miss is one of 10 undefeated teams in the country, including fellow SEC West teams Auburn (5-0) and Mississippi State (5-0).
Florida State and Auburn are ranked 1-2 in both polls this week. The SEC boasts a nation’s-best seven teams in the top 25, including five in the top 10 of the coaches poll.
Ole Miss travels to No. 14 Texas A&M (5-1, 2-1 SEC) this Saturday. ESPN will televise the SEC West battle at 8 p.m. CT from College Station.
