Grant Goforth finished second in the 97th Mississippi Amateur at Reunion Golf & Country Club in Madison Sunday, coming in behind Mississippi State golf coach Clay Homan.

Homan, 40, finished with a four-day total of 9-under 279 and was able to hold off a late surge by Goforth, who also shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday.

Goforth, who helped lead Delta State to an NCAA Division II regional last month, finished second at 5-under 283.

While Homan sputtered, Goforth found his groove and drew even with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14.

“I played great all day,” Goforth, 22, said. “I had two birdies … then (Homan) just kicked it in another gear.”
