Sheriff: 5 fired shots at club

By Rupert Howell

Panola County Sheriff Otis Griffin said late last week that investigators are still working a crime scene west of Sardis at the former “Crash Landing,” club where one man was killed and another seriously injured during an altercation thought to be gang related.

Griffin reported, “There were at least five shooters,” and revealed that several firearms had been recovered.

“We’ve been up there (at the crime scene on 315 west of Sardis) every day. They (investigators) are up there now,” Griffin noted last Thursday afternoon.

Six Clarksdale men were arrested later that day after the early morning Saturday, June 25 incident. As of Thursday charges had not been filed pending further investigation.

Arcenio Johnson, 22, was shot and killed while another man was flown to the Med in Memphis with shoulder injuries.

Griffin earlier said the thought the incident was gang related explaining an altercation had broken out in the building but was squashed by private security. When the crowd was dispersing at approximately 1:30 a.m. is when the shots were fired in the parking lot killing Johnson and injuring the other Clarksdale man.

All six arrested were from out of town with one listing a Memphis address and the others listing residences in Clarksdale.
