Tigers sweep Lewisburg

The South Panola senior baseball team swept the Lewisburg Patriots in a doubleheader Tuesday night, 10-7 and 8-3.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when first baseman Chance Whitten hit a triple and later scored. The Patriots answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers added another run when left fielder Will Daughtery scored after hitting a single to pull within one, 3-2 Patriots.

The Tigers broke open the game in the bottom of the sixth plating eight runs for the 10-3 lead.

Scoring were third baseman Taylor Meek, Whitten, center fielder Tays Hardy, Will Daugherty,  and pitcher Andrew Horne, who all singled to get on base. Hitting doubles were Hunter Ivy, catcher Scotty Daugherty, and right fielder Preston Blair.

The Patriots rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs with no outs before the Tiger defense retired the side.

The Tigers turned a double play as Meek caught a fly ball to third and threw down for the out at first baseman Whitten for two outs. Tiger relief pitcher Will Daughtery struck out the last batter.

In the second game, The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the first when catcher Horne doubled and later scored. Third baseman Meek drew a walk and also scored. J. C. Harper scored the third run by way of a single in the bottom of the first.

The Patriots scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the score but the Tigers answered in the bottom of the frame with two more runs for the 5-2 lead.

First baseman Taylor Karr drew a walk and later scored the fourth run. Hitter Joseph Williams doubled later coming across home plate to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

The Tigers’ defense held strong against the Patriots in top of the third. They answered with three runs by hitter Jesse Pearson, center fielder Hardy and courtesy runner Will Daughtery in bottom of the third.

In top of the fourth the Patriots added one last run but it was not enough as the Tigers secured the win.

The senior baseball team hosted Grenada last night and will return to action Wednesday in Oxford for 4 and 6 p.m. games.

The junior baseball team played in Grenada last night and will be home Wednesday to host Oxford in a 4 and 6 p.m. doubleheader.
