Voters will go to the polls today in Panola County’s District 2 to vote for county supervisor.

Political observers will be eyeing election results to see if incumbent Vernice Avant can fend off five challengers and retain the seat of her late husband, Robert.

Robert Avant held the seat for 20 years and accumulated political muscle throughout the county before he passed away in August 2008.

Also running are Clyde Sellers and Paul Henderson of Crenshaw, Tim Holliday and Johnny Salter of Sardis, and William Pride of the Curtis community.

Mrs. Avant was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to hold the seat until a special election could be held.

Some voters will also cast a ballot for a North Panola School Board race. Former school board president Cecil Dowden and Lasha Turner are competing for the seat.

Voters will cast an electronic ballot with a Diebold voting machine.

Voters with questions can contact the Panola County Circuit Clerk’s office at 487-2073 in Sardis or 563-6210 in Batesville.
