In the District 2 race, incumbent Vernice Avant and five challengers are competing to complete the term of Avant’s late husband, Robert.

Also running are Clyde Seller and Paul Henderson of Crenshaw, Tim Holliday and Johnny Salter of Sardis, and William Pride of Batesville.

Mrs. Avant was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to hold the seat until a special election could be held. The election is set for November 3.

The public forum is being sponsored by newspapers The Southern Reporter and The Panolian, and Sardis FM radio station KBUD.

Radio station general manager Ederic Kerney suggested the idea of a debate to The Panolian.

“Tuesday’s event is technically not a debate, since the candidates will not address each other.

Questions for the candidates will come from the newspapers and the radio station. The public can also submit questions before the event.

“We especially invite the voters of District 2 to hear what the candidates have to say,” said Panolian news editor Rupert Howell.

Candidates are asked to arrive at the Playhouse by 6:30 Tuesday.

Panola Playhouse is located on Main Street in Sardis.
