The South Panola Jr. Varsity baseball squad ended summer league play against Saltillo in a doubleheader.
The second game ended on a shaky note when the Saltillo pitcher was hit in the head by a ball off a bat. He was taken to Tri-Lakes Medical Center for attention, but no other health related information was forthcoming.
He was awake and responsive as the EMTs wheeled him from the field.
Before then, South Panola had a 12-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
The Tigers had scored 11 runs in the first inning and gone through the batting order one and a half times with two outs when head coach Patrick Robey called for the teams to switch.
Taylor Karr pitched for the Tigers and struck out four, allowing one hit and two walks.
Hitting for the Tigers were Will Daugherty, 2-for-2; Luke Latham, 2-for-2, two doubles, one RBI (run batted in); 1-for-2, one RBI, on base error; Chris Townsend, 1-for-2, sac bunt, 1 RBI; Calvin Hawkins, 1-for-2, one RBI; Austin Smith, 2-for-2; Scotty Daugherty, 1-for-1, double, 2 RBIs; and Karr, 1-for-1, 1 RBI.
That was a far different game than the first which ended with a Saltillo 8-2 win.
Will Daugherty pitched three innings and took the loss. Saltillo scored all eight runs in the top of the third inning.
Tays Hardy relieved him for the final inning.
South Panola’s two runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning with bases loaded on a Blake Darby two RBI single to score Scotty Daughtery and Will Dickins. Daugherty had walked and Dickens had singled. Will Daugherty walked to load the bases.
Darby was 2-for-3, one walk, two RBI for the day.
Also hitting was Deon Mix, 1-for-3.
The varsity ended the summer league season last night.
