The Mississippi Highway Patrol has located the truck driver who allegedly struck and killed a Memphis man on March 6 on Interstate 55 near Como, a spokesman said Thursday.

The identity of the driver is forthcoming but had not been released by press time Thursday.

“The report hasn’t been finished yet. I don’t know anything either,” said MHP spokesman Sgt. Leslie White.

The driver’s identify, and the results of an investigation, may be turned over to the district attorney before being released, White also said.

Authorities have been searching for a red 18-wheeler and its driver following the death of Bennie Earl Hicks just south of the Como exit.

A passing motorist spotted his body and notified authorities.

Investigators who responded to the scene found Hicks’ body 30 feet from the roadway.

Personal items from his wallet, including photos and cash, had scattered through the tall grass.

A red piece of the semi-truck was also found, suggesting Hicks was struck by an 18-wheeler.

Hicks had walked away from a disabled automobile, most likely to seek help, when he was struck in the southbound lane near the Como exit.

The vehicle was parked on the shoulder of the northbound lane.

Hicks worked as a rehab counselor at a Memphis rescue mission, Calvary Street Ministry.
