Vehicle involved in wreck ‘just took off’

By John Howell Sr.

The driver of a car involved in a two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Highways 6 and 51 told officers that he was stopped when “his vehicle just took off, causing him to run the red light,” Batesville Police Department (BPD) Deputy Police Chief Don Province said.

The BPD report stated that Terrence Kuykendall, 211 Claude Street, Batesville was westbound on Highway 6 and drove into the path of a pickup driven south on Highway 51 by John Mabry, 659 Cypress Corner Road, Senatobia, Province said.

Batesville firemen spent some minutes at the site of the 3 p.m. crash working with emergency power tools to free a 59-year-old female passenger of Kuykendall’s car who had been trapped in the back seat by the collision.

Once freed, the passenger was placed on a guerney and rolled to a waiting Air Evac medical transport helicopter which had landed nearby in the Gateway Shopping Center parking lot.

Also transported by ground ambulance to Tri-Lakes Medical Center was a 38-year-old female who had been a passenger in Mabry’s pickup, Province said. A 20-year-old passenger in Mabry’s truck did not require emergency transport nor did a 24-year-old male passenger in Kuykendall’s car, he added.
