Local college players named to all-conference teams

•Five Ole Miss Rebels earned recognition from the Southeastern Conference coaches Tuesday, as their 2008 All-SEC football teams were announced by the league office.

Seniors Michael Oher (OL) and Peria Jerry (DL) were selected to the first team, after also earning first-team honors from the Associated Press on Monday. The coaches’ second team featured Rebel juniors John Jerry (OL), Greg Hardy (DL) and Joshua Shene (K).

•Mississippi State senior defensive back Derek Pegues was tabbed with second-team all-Southeastern Conference honors as determined by a vote of the league’s coaches, the SEC announced Tuesday.

 Pegues was named to the squad for the third-consecutive season, becoming the first State player since Mario Haggan (2000-02) to accomplish that feat.

He finished his career with school records for total kick returns, total kick return yardage, kickoff returns and kickoff return yardage. He also closed out his tenure in Starkville with 12 interceptions, tied for second all time in school history.

•Conference USA announced its 2008 All-Freshman football team, as selected by the league’s 12 head football coaches.

Three Golden Eagle defenders including defensive lineman Terrance Pope of Pope were chosen to the squad.

Pope has appeared in all 12 of his team’s games, including one start against Boise State, and has posted 14 total tackles (8 solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss.

•Jemarcus Hardrick of Batesville was named to the Kansas Jr. College All-Conference offensive second team for his play on the Fort Scott team this past season. Hardrick, tackle, had 10 pancake blocks in one game this past season.
