To the editor:
I am an avid reader of The Panolian newspaper. Each week I purchase the Tuesday and Friday paper. I know that a subscription would be cheaper but I can’t wait until the mailman runs in the afternoon. I pick up my paper on the way to work in the morning. I read the paper from front to back, taking in all the news that has happened in our city, county and nation.
It was with eager anticipation that I waited for Friday’s paper (November 7). I wanted to see what our paper had to say about one of the most momentous events to happen in our country, in my lifetime. I’m still waiting. The 2008 Presidential election showed us that America is ready for change. That we as a people were finally ready to come together in unity and make that change, in the form of a vote. I was very disappointed to see this great milestone in our history reduced to what amounted to a footnote in our local paper.
By your own account the people of Panola County (among many others) chose president elect, Barack Obama, for president.
Don’t you think we deserve a little more than what was reported. Even the helicopter that was purchased got a picture. I don’t know what the future holds for us, only God does. I don’t know if president elect, Obama, will be able to fix all the wrongs in our country. Probably not.
I do know that the American people trusted him enough to give him a try. I’ve lived in Panola County all my life. I grew up one of 15 children in a family of sharecroppers. Life was hard. We depended on God, and still do.
I’ve seen a lot of things change in my lifetime. I’ve seen a lot of things that haven’t changed, and sadly some things will never change. I guess I’m just a little sad. We tell our little boys and girls they can grow up to be anything they want to be in this country of ours, but when it actually happens, there’s silence.
I think we the people of Panola County deserve a little bit more from our local paper. I think President elect Obama deserves more.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Lewis
