ND season comes to end

By Myra Bean

Halloween night turned into a little shop of horrors for North Delta as the Green Wave had its season come to an end with a 34-6 loss at the hands of Winona Christian.

The Stars set the tone early when Wade O’Briant busted a 61-yard touchdown run on the game’s very first play from scrimmage. North Delta took its opening drive and marched deep into Winona territory before Garrett Dismukes intercepted a Bateman Greenlee pass.

After both teams exchanged punts, North Delta snuffed out a potential Winona scoring threat when Geri Lamm picked off a Kasey Chandler pass inside the Green Wave 20-yard line.

The Stars however got the ball back  on the next possession as Greenlee was yet again intercepted by Will Watkins. Winona capitalized on the opportunity when Jeremy Boyette blasted in from two yards out with 34 seconds left before halftime. Chandler’s pass for the two-point conversion failed leaving the score 12-0 at intermission.

Winona (7-2) extended its lead to 20-0 midway through the third quarter on a 48-yard run by Michael Tompkins. The drive was set up by a Greenlee fumble on the Stars’ 37-yard line.

North Delta (6-5) got on the scoreboard with 10:45 left in the game when Greenlee hooked up with Chris Reeves for a nine-yard touchdown reception to make the score 20-6 after Greenlee’s pass for two-points failed.

Winona put the finishing touches on the night with a pair of touchdowns in the last three minutes of the game as Chandler hauled in an eight-yard touchdown pass from Walker Jackson followed by O’Briant’s 38-yard run with 35 seconds left in the game with Boyette adding the PAT.

Two teams North Delta defeated in regular season were the wild card picks for playoffs, Tunica Institute and Marvell Academy.
