John Howell reports at noon

  Tuesday noon

We walked around the neighhood this morning, along Upperline Street, across Magazine to Camp, then over to Lyons and up to Prytania.

Our destination was a cold drink machine outside Zara’s grocery. For Rosemary it is an occasional destination when only a cold Coke will do.

We often get down on Cokes and other soft drinks because of the unhealthful downsides. So when we accumulated our hurricane food, we spurned all soft drinks, and laid in coffee, water and red wine.

Rosemary started talking about that drink machine at Zara yesterday before the winds had subsided, wondering if there were any drinks and if the machine would work.

Our walk there was rewarded. Not only did the machine work, it contained Cokes that were ice cold.

There are a few limbs down, a few fences. Unlike Katrina, little roof damage is evident.
An announcement is expected this afternoon about evacuees from Orleans Parish can return. Some convenience stores may reopen today. Larger stores like Rouse’s, Winn-Dixie and Whole Foods are probably more dependent on when their employees can get back. Gasoline is short in the city. So much was purchased to fuel the evacuation that they are having a hard time replacing it.
