Despite a heavy rainstorm last Sunday, work on South Panola High School’s new astroturf football playing surface is moving at full speed .

“Right now I say we’re ahead of schedule,” said Mike Eubanks, who is overseeing the operation. “Everything is looking good, we are in the process of putting down tarp on the field that will be covered by two layers of rock, which we will put down next week.“

Eubanks has been in charge of similar projects in Hattiesburg, Oak Grove High School and St. Patrick’s High School in Gulfport.

Eubanks said after the rocks are spread out, the new turf will be laid down early next week.

“We are hoping the scoreboard can be put down the same time or near about the same time we get ready to put the turf down. I know the weather can be tricky at times in the summer months, but right now everything will be in place by the time football season gets here.”

The turf will be shipped  from Duluth, Ga which is the only place in the United States that makes the playing surface.

The turf is purchased by the South Panola Athletic Foundation, which is supported through private and donated funds.
