"You haven’t paid your fines in five years and you’re not leaving without taking care of this. You can work, pay or go to jail," the judge said.

"I’ll work," said Brooks.

Brooks entered the city’s work release program for 50 days instead of paying his fines of $2,022.

The city’s work program is an option for defendants who cannot pay their fines.

Brandy Sartin of Crowder, also entered the city’s work program for old fines of $373 that have been due since July 2002.

Ronnie Robinson, 212 Deaton St., Batesville, had his contempt of court-old fines of $732 case continued after he told the judge that he had no income and he couldn’t work for the city due to health issues.

"You need to come back next week with a solution or a lawyer," the judge said.

Emit Shegog, 224 Pegues Circle, Batesville, had a warrant issued for his arrest for failure to appear to answer old fines of $639 that have been due since August 2006.

Anthony B. House, 214 Dewberry, Sardis, told the judge he thought he paid his old fines of $354 that have been due since October 2006.

"Do you have your receipts?" asked McKenzie.

"Not on me," House said.

"I don’t understand why you wouldn’t bring your receipts to court," said McKenzie.

He was given a week to report back to court with proof he paid his old fines.

James Wright, 294 Jones Rd., Batesville, entered the city’s work program for 15 days instead of paying old fines of $600 that have been due since April 2006.

The contempt court case of Terrie Dodd, 934-A Plum Point, Pope, was continued. Dodd owes old fines of $526 that have been due since November 2005.

Jessie Jefferson was ordered to return to court after stating he never received any rules or guidelines about working on the city work program, nor had he signed the work program form.

Jefferson told the judge that he missed a few days of work for the city work program because he had to help Ted Stewart work.

"Ted (Stewart) sent a letter to Renee (city court clerk) and she wouldn’t take it," said Jefferson.

He also said he worked 41 days and only had 49 days left, but the rules say that if you miss a day of work, you must work an extra five days to make up for it.

McKenzie showed him a copy of the rules with Jefferson’s signature on it.

Jefferson was given 13 more days to work to satisfy old fines of $502.
