Judge denies bond reduction for man accused in van theft

Judge Bill McKenzie denied a bond reduction requested from a Sardis resident who said he was guilty of grand larceny by taking a van from Jesus Loves Me day care center in Batesville.
Brian Ray, 17, of 1180 Riverview, Sardis, faces charges of felony fleeing from police officers, grand larceny, malicious mischief by disfiguring the Panola Country Club’s golf course, loud music, reckless driving, no driver’s license, no seat belt, failure to yield to emergency vehicle and no turn signal.
Attorney David Walker was appointed to defend Ray. The case was continued.
Andre Middleton, 260 Greenbriar, Courtland, entered a "not guilty" plea to stalking Jennifer Wrenn. He was fined $316 for no driver’s license and no seat belt after entering guilty pleas to those charges.
He is currently out on bond for felony child abuse.
A trial date was set for August 2 for the stalking charge.
Domestic violence
Minnie Porter, Meadowview, Batesville, entered a "not guilty" plea to domestic violence-simple assault. A trial date was set for August 9.
John Cotton Sr., Meadowview, Batesville, entered a "not guilty" plea to domestic violence-simple assault. A trial date was set for August 9.
James Beavers, Broadway, Batesville, had a domestic violence-simple assault case dismissed after affiant Linda Beavers failed to appear to prosecute.
Clarence Ward, 155 Martin Luther King #9, Batesville, entered a "not guilty" plea to domestic violence-simple assault.
Other
Brian Wilkes, 312 Wells Rd, Courtland, was fined $305 for petit larceny for stealing a stainless steel shelf from Sonic.
"They were remodeling and I thought they were throwing it away," said Wilkes.
Tracy Barksdale, 119 1/2 Field St., Batesville, had a false information case continued.
Calvert Smith entered the city’s work release program for 36 days instead of paying fines of $1,469 for possession of marijuana in a vehicle, no proof of insurance and no driver’s license.
Takeedra Gordon, 431 Cutter St., Lambert, paid a fine of $610 prior to court for a shoplifting charge.
Dionne Rayford, 1042 Trantham Rd., Batesville, entered the city’s work program for 51 days to satisfy a fine of $610 for shoplifting.
The city’s work release program is an option for defendants who cannot pay their fines.
Eric Henderson, 818 Bethlehem Rd., Batesville, had a driving while license suspended case dismissed. Officer Drew Pitcock who issued the ticket resigned.
Margaret Kuebler, 104 Oak Lane, Batesville, had a trespassing charge remanded to the files.
Simple assault
Two counts of simple assault of a minor filed against Nakita Blackmon, 226 Noble St., Batesville, were dismissed after affiant Tabitha Hamilton failed to appear.
After hearing testimonies from several juveniles in three other simple assault cases Wednesday, Judge McKenzie found three defendants not guilty.
Vanessa Mister, 38 Henry Dr. Ext., Courtland; Lorice Holmes, 212 Noble St., Batesville and
Gloria Gleaton, 704 Green Rd., Pope, were all found not guilty of simple assault of a minor.
"I am not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt," said Judge McKenzie.
Grand jury
Marco Lamar, 112 Eureka St., Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for charges of aggravated assault, possession of controlled substance with intent, weapon possession by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in city limits. The charges stemmed from a shooting in the Wal-Mart parking lot on June 30.
Marcus House, 306 Arizona, Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for possession of controlled substance and possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
Kemisha Trantham, 2275 Shiloh Rd., Courtland, was referred to the grand jury for an embezzlement charge.
The case of Veronica Roberson, 330 Hays St., Batesville, charged with harboring or concealing a prisoner, disorderly conduct – failure to comply and resisting arrest, was continued.
Also continued was the case of Kentrell Wiley, 330 Hays St., Batesville. He is charged with escape, resisting arrest, no driver’s license, petit larceny and loud music.
Demario Jones, 1046 Precient Dr., Tunica, was referred to the grand jury for possession of controlled substance, driving while license suspended and no proof of insurance.
Contempt of court
Terry Jackson, 85 Willow Rd., Sardis, was sentenced to 30 days in jail to satisfy old fines of $459 that have been due since February 2003. He was already serving time for other charges while awaiting trial.
Bennie Leland, 204 Williams, Batesville, was told to have his old fines of $513 paid in 30 days or serve six months in jail. His fines have been due since April 1999.
Jacqueline Smith, 108-C Bradford St., Batesville, entered the city’s work release program for 41 days to satisfy old fines of $1,921 that have been due since June 2005.
Perry Poole, 113-C Cole Dr., Batesville, entered the city’s work release program for 16 days to satisfy old fines of $652 that have been due since July 2005.
James E. Williams of Courtland, entered the city’s work release program for 36 days to satisfy old fines of $1,351 that have been due since July 2004.
Matthew Daugherty, 3066 J.G. West, Como, was told to have his old fines of $405 paid within 30 days or serve six months in jail. His fines have been due since June 2004.
Grand larceny
Jason Bobo, 105 Gore St., Batesville, charged with grand larceny case continued. He will have a preliminary hearing August 2.

Charles Orr, 209-C Lester St., Batesville, was fined $412 for no driver’s license and loud music.
Odell White, 11 Elm CR, Charleston, was fined $465 for no tag and no driver’s license.
Jennifer Barksdale, 4238 Curtis Rd., Batesville, was fined $281 for no driver’s license.
James Lewis, 5342 Lucius Taylor, Como, was fined $356 for driving while license suspended.
Renald N. Cox, 1926 Shiloh Rd., Courtland, entered a "not guilty" plea to loud music. A trial was set for August 2.
John Glenn Hutchens, 936 Carlisle Rd., Courtland, was fined $356 for driving while license suspended.
Micheal Hyde, 202 Armstrong St., Batesville, had a no driver’s license charge continued.
"I lost my driver’s license," said Hyde.
He was given time to find his license or come back with proof he had a license.
Pamela Kay Deason, 218 Dettor, Batesville, was fined $1,279 for driving while license suspended, no proof of insurance, running a stop sign and expired tag.
John Simmons, 104-F Bradford, Batesville, was fined $469 for driving while license suspended and speeding.
Malcolm Braddox, 766 Tubbs, Batesville, was fined $316 for no seat belt and no driver’s license.
Tarvell Gleaton, 744-C Green Rd., Pope, was fined $785 for driving while license suspended and switched tag.
Prince M. Poole, 113 Cole Dr., Batesville, was fined $281 for no driver’s license.
