There was some great excitement in town Tuesday evening as some 100 Mississippi State Bulldog fans turned out to meet and greet Bulldog head football coach Sylvester Croom.

The Bulldog Club hosted the event in one of the meeting rooms in the Batesville Civic Center.

The crowd socialized for about 30 minutes before Croom spoke. NCAA rules forbade media to record any meeting notes, according to one of the coordinators, but Croom did speak in a one-on-one interview before the meeting.

Croom said he was in Batesville to meet Bulldog Club members and to hopefully get other people to join the club.

"Lately I have been doing a lot of traveling around since spring practice visiting with our Bulldog Club members and giving them an update on what we have been doing, where our program is right now and trying to recruit members to the Bulldog Club," Croom said.

Croom said he is unveiling fund raising plans to continue their ongoing two year campaign.

"We will continue to upgrade our facilities. That has been ongoing the last two years to get us where we are competitive with everybody else," he said. "Now, we want to move ahead of everybody else."

Croom spoke of the success of spring practice and said the team and coaches are looking forward to the upcoming year.

"We are very much excited about the new year," Croom said. "Our players are at home now. They’ll be back on May 31 to start summer school. We expect to have everybody back in the summer working out, going to school, getting to know each other better. We are going into the fall with a lot higher expectation."

The new signees will not join the veteran players until the second semester of summer school which will begin the week following the fourth of July.

"Some of them don’t get out of school until the first of June and you have all kinds of paperwork to be done, get grades cleared before they get in school," Croom explained. "We will give them a little more time."

Mississippi State opens the season at home Thursday, August 31 in an ESPN televised game against South Carolina. The time for this non-conference SEC matchup has not been set.
