Fans, School Officials Wait for Stadium Completion |

The kickplates are being installed at the South Panola stadium. Fans have been assured the stadium will be ready for play Aug. 28. |
BY MYRA BEAN SPORTS EDITOR BATESVILLE – "The architect and contractor have assured me we will play ball on the 28th," said South Panola School District superintendent Dr. C.L. Stevenson.
Coupled with the normal excitement of starting a new season is some anxiousness about the status of the stadium.
The countdown continues as the beginning of the South Panola football season looms nearer. Construction workers have been arriving early and working late to see that the home side is finished. |

Ellis Places in World Fire and Police Games |

Ken Ellis just returned from the 2003 World Fire and Police Games held in Barcelona, Spain. He earned one silver medal and three bronze medals. |
BY MYRA BEAN SPORTS EDITOR BATESVILLE – Participating in the World Fire and Police Games for the 10th time was just as exciting for Ken Ellis of Batesville as the first time.
Ellis and his wife, Linda, just returned from Barcelona, Spain, where Ken competed in seven events and the decathlon.
He placed second in the decathlon and earned the silver medal.
He placed third in the 100 meter high hurdles, the triple jump and the hammer throw. He received bronze medals for those places.
The decathlon was comprised of 10 events: 100 meter dash, high jump, long jump, 400 meter dash, 100 meter hurdles, discus, javelin, shot put, pole vault and the 1500 meter run.
Ellis said he is always amazed as the camaraderie between the countries and the athletes and the need to adapt to people in foreign counties. |
