Staff Report

Liquor and illegal gambling resulted, predictably, in several shots fired at a house on Wolf Rd., west of Sardis, in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 7.

Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby said three gunshot victims were taken to a hospital, none with life-threatening injuries. Some suspects were arrested, but names and details were not available Monday as deputies continued investigating the shootings.

“It was a dice game with drinking, and probably drugs, at a house on a dead end road in the county,” Darby said. “When deputies arrived on the scene everyone scattered but they were able to determine who the shooters were and they were found and taken into custody.”

There are few houses in that portion of the county and the house had been used for gambling games before, Darby said. The area has been on deputies’ radar for some time, and further arrests for illegal activities may be pending.

Other than those arrests, police and deputies around the county reported few incidents during the July 4th holiday and the weekend. Batesville police and officials in other towns answered some domestic disturbance calls and issued moving violations during the period.
