NP boys win first round at district

North Panola’s Jermarcus Jones still managed to score 12 points in the opening district tournament round while surrounded by most of the Charleston team Tuesday night.

District tournament play has started across the state and in 2-3A the Cougars played in the first round and advanced after beating Charleston for the third time this season in a 58-38 blowout.
The Cougars did not give the Tigers any hope as they came out of the tip in a on a 13-0 run. The first half was a full of fast breaks for the Cougars and Darrell Young took advantage with 11 points in the first half.
The Cougars went into the half leading 30-18. In the second half the big men for the Cougars lead the way collecting 20 of the 28 second half points.
The Cougars blew out the Tigers and were led by Young with 16 points. Other scorers were Jamarcus Jones with 12; Jordan Dandridge with eight; Mario Fenner and Kenneth Jefferson with six points each; Vennis Mills and Sylvonta Oliver with four points each and Jay’Sean Smith with three.
The Cougars played Independence Thursday night. The winners will play for the championship tonight at 8:30 p.m.. The losers will advance to the consolation round today at 5:30 p.m.
The girls played Charleston last night. The winners will play for the championship tonight at 7 p.m. The losers will play for the consolation at 4 p.m.
The Cougar teams are already in the North State tournament and are now playing for seeding. The top two teams for boys and girls will host Monday and the bottom two will travel.
