Sardis looking at land use plan

By Rupert Howell
The Town of Sardis needs a new comprehensive land use plan, according to attorney Tommy Shuler, who told that town’s board of mayor and aldermen Tuesday that the current plan in use since 1971, “has some deficiencies.”
Shuler said former public works director Bubba McDowell who was also tasked with enforcing code ordinances often ran into issues that were not addressed in the  original plan.
Shuler explained the process would be to adopt a new comprehensive land use  plan then adopt a land use map.
The long-time town attorney reminded board members they would need to build funds into the future budget to cover the process that he estimated would cost between $6,000 and $8,000.
The Sardis board also voted to begin foreclosure procedures on Conveyor Tech who is purchasing a building from that municipality and is behind on monthly and a lump sum payment in the amount of approximately $65,000 including interest and penalties.
Shuler estimated the foreclosure process usually takes 45 days.
