SPJV defeat MUS in Monday night action
By Brad Greer
Quarterback Kanoda Lewis hit Montray Blackburn for a 20-yard touchdown reception with 54 seconds remaining in the game to lift South Panola’s Junior Varsity to a 12-8 victory over Memphis University School Monday night at Robert H. Dunlap Stadium.
Defensive lineman Terry Bishop put an exclamation point on the win by scooping up a fumble and rambling 48 yards for a apparent touchdown that was negated by a penalty.
Trailing 8-6 with 1:48 left in the game, South Panola began their game-winning drive on the MUS 40 after stopping the Owls on downs that was also aided by a unsportsmanlike penalty.
Three plays produced four yards for South Panola as they faced fourth-and-six from its own 46 where Blackburn reeled in a 36-yard heave from Lewis to the MUS 20 to keep the drive alive.
On the following play, Lewis rolled to his right and threw a dart to Blackburn in the endzone for the game winner as the two-point conversion failed.
MUS led 8-0 at intermission after scoring on a five-yard run with 1:57 left in the first half.
South Panola took the second half possession and drove 70 yards on 14 plays capped off by a one-yard run by Markel Gleaton at the 11:49 mark.
Gleaton led the Tigers in rushing with nine carries for 38 yards. Montreal Pegues followed with seven carries for 34 yards. Lewis completed 7-of-13 passes for 111 yards and one interception.
Blackburn recorded four receptions for 75 yards while Quin Bradford chipped in with three catches for 36 yards. Jaqualin Gillespie added a key interception in the second half to stop an Owl drive.
