Deadline Sept. 9 for school trustee candidate qualification

By Rupert Howell
The qualifying period begins Wednesday, August 10 for a five-year position on local school boards and runs through Friday, September 9 according to the Panola County Circuit Clerk’s office.
Chris Fairlee, who serves as president of the North Panola School District board of trustees, currently holds the  Position Three spot.
In South Panola the Position Four seat is up for election, a seat currently held by Buddy Gray.
Both Fairlee and Gray are expected to run for re-election.
Both NP and SP trustee boards are made up of five trustees elected from sub-districts within the school district and serve five-year staggered terms so that one position comes open each year.
School trustee posts are non-partisan eliminating the need for primary elections.
Those positions will be on the November 8 ballots along with the presidential candidates, although in some instances where the election is not contested, election commissioners may decide to leave the name off of the ballot.
