District’s third graders excel on test
By Rupert Howell
The South Panola School District’s initial pass rate was 94.6% with the third grade gateway reading test according to Superintendent Tim Wilder who told his trustee board earlier this month, “We are doing very well statewide—above state average.”
South Panola ranked 19 of 143 districts statewide, tying with three districts: Oxford, Petal, and Yazoo County School Districts.
Batesville Intermediate School had 255 of 272 students pass the initial test. Nine of 17 who failed the initial test passed the first retest.
Pope School third grade students had an impressive 63 of 64 pass the initial test with the lone student taking the retest and passing.
“We were ecstatic about Pope School’s results,” Wilder told trustees after telling them the district was very pleased with the district schools in Batesville.
Only three seniors may be disqualified from receiving a diploma due to not passing state testing Wilder informed board members. He explained that earlier in the school year 32 were missing the mark on state test. Through remediation and tutoring, that number had been reduced to three by the May meeting with the possibility that the number could be further reduced.
However 18 seniors still lacked course work that could keep them from graduating Wilder noted and again mentioned the number could also be reduced by graduation date.
Extended school will begin for grades K-8 June 6 with 14 buses running throughout the district all funded by a 21st Century five-year grant now in its second year.
“This program is very valuable to our kids because they are the ones that need it the most,” Wilder told trustees while warning them not to be alarmed if they saw buses running during the summer with only a few kids on each bus.
Wilder estimated 380 students will take part in the 21st Century extended school program.
School trustees have scheduled a noon recess meeting today, Friday, May 27 to accept bids on two landscaping jobs for building projects at Batesville Kindergarten and South Panola High School’s Ninth Grade Wing.
