Columbus downs SP in district action

The South Panola basketball teams returned to action Friday with a district trip to Columbus.
Both girls and boys teams fell short to the Falcons.
The Lady Tigers fell 48-34 while the boys were shortchanged 77-39.
Columbus Ladies 48, SP 34
The Lady Tigers (4-8 overall, 0-2 district) traveled to Baldwyn in a game added to its schedule on Saturday and won 51-37.
The Lady Falcons proved too tough for the Lady Tigers as they took a 26-14 halftime lead.
Marshala Doyle, Jasmine Wright and Chloe Morgan scored two points each for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter. Alexis Smith and Sydney Morgan contributed in the second quarter.
Wright lit up the boards in the third quarter with 10 of her total 18 points. Smith scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers still fell short.
Other scorers for the Lady Tigers were Sydney Morgan, four points; Doyle and Chloe Morgan, two points each.
Columbus boys 77, SP 39
The Tigers shot well below 50 percent in field goals and free throws in its loss to No. 4 ranked Columbus. South Panola (5-3, 0-2) fell behind 16-6 at the end of the first quarter. Columbus maintained the pace in the second quarter to take a 33-22 lead at halftime.
Andre Gleaton and Jordin Smith both scored five points in the second quarter.
Smith led the Tigers with 14 points as the only player in double figures.
Gleaton followed with eight points. Other scorers include Dris Carlton and Byron Robinson, four points each; Montray Blackburn, three points; Quen Poole, Bobby Thomas and Robert Hentz rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Tigers are home this week for two district games.
Tonight, the teams take on district foe Tupelo. The Tupelo girls are 12-5 coming into their district opener. The Clarion-Ledger No. 6 ranked, Maxpreps No. 3 ranked boys are 17-1.
The Jr. varsity girls will open play at 4 p.m.
