Judge Bill McKenzie referred two defendants to the grand jury during Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday.
Charles E. Orr Sr., 386 Greenbriar Circle, Courtland, was referred to the grand jury for aggravated assault.
“Do you have any questions?” the judge asked.
“I was wondering if I could get my bond reduced?” Orr replied.
The judge asked the city prosecuting attorney and officers working the case if they had a problem with a bond reduction.
Batesville police officers told the judge they could not agree to lower Orr’s bond of $25,000 due to the nature of the crime and the possibility that Orr may go back to the victim’s house.
Laderrick K. Wells, 533 Womack Rd., Lambert, was referred to the grand jury for grand larceny and embezzlement. Wells was out on bond.
Levest Echols Jr., 111 Hoskins Rd., Batesville, told the judge last week he wanted a continuance giving him time to find a lawyer.
Echols returned to court this week to tell the judge he could not afford a lawyer and he would enter a guilty plea to DUI-first, no seat belt and simple possession of marijuana. He was fined $1,257.
Brandon D. Johnson, 1708 Shiloh Rd., Courtland, had old fines of $739 due since July 2014.
“Contempt of court occurs when people don’t do what they are supposed to do. Usually it’s because a person owes old fines,” the judge explained to Johnson.
The judge told Johnson to have his fines paid in full immediately or serve time in jail.
Terry S. Callicutt, 85 Willow Rd., Sardis, failed to appear to answer charges for simple possession of marijuana. Al Williams Bonding was notified.
Bernice Webb, 324 Hays St., Batesville, had a simple assault case dismissed after the affiant, Shirley Taylor, failed to appear to prosecute.
Arlando J. Webb, 204 Vance St., Batesville, had a simple assault case dismissed after affiant, Shirley Taylor, failed to appear.
Gregory Carr, 335 Shamrock, Batesville, had a domestic violence-simple assault case dismissed after the affiant, Renata Brooks, failed to appear to prosecute.
Tony O. Cooper, 207 Draper St., Batesville, was fined $910 for simple possession of marijuana and no tag.
