Five-year-old Zykevian Dushum Wright burned to death Thursday night in a trailer home located on Highway 51 North in Como according to Panola County Coroner Gracie Grant Gulledge.
The coroner said a fire at the location was reported at approximately 10:30 p.m. She was later notified and arrived at 11:30.
Grant said the victim lived in the trailer with his mother, Kaneshia Wright, who was home and told firefighters she did not hear a smoke alarm.
David Morganetti with the state fire marshall’s office returned Friday to further investigate and local fire investigators from Panola County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene Thursday night according to Emergency Management Director Daniel Cole who also serves as the county’s fire department coordinator.
Cole confirmed that the fire call came in at 10:36 p.m. and the first fire trucks arrived at 10:47. Como and Sardis fire units responded as well as Panola Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Operations personnel.
Cole said firemen found heavy smoke and fire upon their arrival. Firemen also confirmed a body was at the scene and notified Coroner Gulledge.
Although the cause of the fire had not been determined Friday morning, Cole said, “We have located an area of the mobile home where we feel like it started.”
Several neighbors were on hand to witness the fire’s aftermath according to Cole who commented, “It’s just one of those real sad occasions,” Cole added.
