Two land commissioners replaced by supervisors at Monday meeting

By Rupert Howell
In an abbreviated meeting Monday morning, Panola County supervisors approved two new Planning Commission members while re-appointing eight current members to the 10-member board.

Trustees tabled appointments the previous week, noting that one of the new recommended appointees was owner of a business from whom the county purchases equipment and service. Supervisors not only wanted the potential appointee to be aware, but also wanted board attorney Bill McKenzie to advise them on the matter.

Monday McKenzie made it clear that there was nothing wrong with Kirk Rowsey, whose family owns Big Delta Honda, serving on the Land Commission board, but there was a problem with Panola County doing business there if he was appointed.

“We spend money there every month,” Panola County Sheriff’s Department employee Robbie Haley said.

Road Department Manager Lygunnah Bean expressed the same, noting that his department depends on Big Delta to service chainsaws and other equipment.

McKenize advised that Big Delta could still sell items to the county where three bids were received but suggested the county use another supplier for even small items and service.
Woody Drake was the other new member appointed to that board at the recommendation of District Five Supervisor Cole Flint. Both Flint and District Three Supervisor John Thomas had been openly critical of some actions taken by the 10-member board in the past.

Supervisors appoint two members per district every five years. Thomas recommended Rowsey who will fill the position held by Danny Walker and Drake, who was recommended by Flint,  will fill a position filled by Bob Haltom from District Five.

Other members on that board are: Danny Holland, Danny Jones, Wanda Carmichael, Arleen Wilson, Fred Carter, Sledge Taylor, Verna Hunter, and Tim Holloway.

The commission meets the second Monday of each month, rotating between Batesville and Sardis Courthouses. The next meeting is in Batesville Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.
