The parents of an eight-week-old infant found the child dead Monday morning, said Sheriff Dennis Darby.

Sheriff’s investigators and Department of Human Services were investigating the death late Monday, he said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, said coroner Gracie Grant-Gulledge.

State law requires an autopsy of any child two and under, she said.

The death occurred at a home at 109-B Henry Heafner Road, located near Sardis Lake.

Sheriff Darby identified the child as Colton Derin Patton.

The parents are Jessica Lynn Martin and Daniel Derin Patton.

After the parents fed the infant at midnight, they checked on him at 5 a.m. and he appeared to be sleeping, said Darby.

The sheriff’s department received a call at approximately 10:19 Monday morning, he said.
