A Panola County jail inmate who apparently attempted suicide remains in critical condition in the Memphis Regional Medical Center.

Sheriff Dennis Darby said that Michael Goforth, 36, was found hanging in his cell about 3 p.m. Monday. He was transported to Tri-Lakes Medical Center then airlifted to the Med.

Darby said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident.
Goforth is a state inmate who was being held at the jail.
