No opponent so far for trustee candidate

Two contested offices so far appear on the Nov. 6 General election ballot with a qualifying deadline of September 7 approaching for the District 5 South Panola School Trustee post approaching.

Batesville businessman Kenny Hopper last week announced his candidacy for that post and was still unopposed at press time Thursday.

Incumbent Kim Nix is not seeking re-election to the position.

Hopper is a South Panola and Ole Miss graduate who has been employed at Graves Oil Company for 22 years. He is currently president of the South Panola Foundation for Education and an active member of South Panola Athletic Foundation. He is married to the former Candy Holmes, a retired South Panola school teacher, and they have two grown children who also went to South Panola.

Wanda L. Carmichael will challenge incumbent Jerry Perkins for Election Commission, Supervisor District Four and Bonnie Land and Deliley Gatson will face each other on the ballot for the District Five Election Post. The winner will take the seat formerly held by Election Commission President Runt McMinn who did not seek re-election.

Batesville political activist Edith Cole has withdrawn her name from election according to deputies in the Circuit Clerk’s Office.

Incumbent election commissioners Dorothy Wilbourn, Julius Harris and Jimmy Herron have each qualified for re-election for their post in supervisor Districts One, Two and Three respectively and are all unopposed on the Tuesday, November 6 General Election.
