The North Delta softball team geared up for district play over the weekend by posting a third-place finish in the Kirk tournament.
After dropping a 14-2 verdict to Bayou in a Friday night opening round game, the Lady Green Wave (5-4) fought their way through the losers’ bracket by winning three straight games before falling yet again to Bayou 8-3 late Saturday afternoon.
North Delta began their march by defeating Calhoun 4-1 in the first elimination game. Sarah Johnson picked up the pitching victory as the eighth-grader struck out six in four innings of work.
The Lady Waves then blanked division foe Kirk 8-0 in the following round as Myles Durham scored three runs in the victory. Peyton Rico tossed a no-hitter while fanning 11 batters and walking five over four innings.
North Delta advanced to the semi-finals by downing Carroll 9-5 as a six-run first inning propelled the Waves to the victory.
Bayou ended North Delta’s impressive tournament run as the five-time Class A champions plated six runs in the second inning which led to their victory.
North Delta opens up defense of their district championship today at Kirk starting a 5 p.m. with junior varsity play followed by varsity action at 6:30.
