James Hulbert Harris


SOUTHAVEN – James Hulbert Harris, 87, formerly of Batesville, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Desoto.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Dickins Funeral Home. Hal Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.

Harris, born Aug. 28, 1924, in Potts Camp, to the late Durley Hulbert Harris and Delta Mae Goolsby Harris, was a member of Batesville Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Blakely Harris of Southaven; one daughter, Judy Kay Harris of Southaven; two sons, James Durley Harris of Brentwood, Tenn. and Michael Eugene Harris of Brandon; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jessie Mae McGregory

CLARKSDALE –  Jessie Mae McGregory, 73, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at Union Grove M.B. Church in Clarksdale with burial in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at St. John M.B. Church. Rev. Dr. L.C. Tyler will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

 McGregory was born August 26, 1938, to John Henry McGregory and Pauline Booker McGregory in Cleveland. She was a retired factory worker for Cooper Tire Co. and member of St. John M.B. Church in Clarksdale. Ms. McGregory was choir president, Sunday school teacher, group captain and secretary.  She was member of morning star order of Eastern Star and chapter #454 PHA Heroins of Jericho.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley McGregory Rounds, Pearline Newell and Christine Johnson, all of Clarksdale; one son, Richard L. Thomas of Memphis; one sister, Dollies Howard of Southaven; 19 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Effie Moore

BATESVILLE – Effie Moore, 91, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Springhill ASA M.B. Church in Courtland with burial in church cemetery. Pastor Lewis Wilson will officiate. Cooleys Mortuary has charge.

Moore was born March 17, 1921 in Batesville to Marshall Johnson and Beulah Johnson in Batesville.  She was a domestic worker and member of Springhill Asa M.B. Church in Courtland.

Survivors include her daughter, Esther Johnson of Courtland; two sons, Johnny Johnson of Courtland and Marshall Roy Johnson of Okla.; three sisters, Minnie Booth, Lula Johnson and Elnora Johnson, all of Batesville; one brother, Mack Johnson of Batesville; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren

Carl Eugene Thompson

SARDIS – Carl Eugene Thompson, 74, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at his residence.

Services were held Thursday at Dickins Funeral Home. Hal Johnson officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.    

Thompson, born Jan. 15, 1938, in Panola County, to the late Carl Eugene Thompson Sr. and Lillie Lee Johnson Thompson, was retired from Panola Mills.

Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Linda Lee Brewer Thompson of Sardis; two sons, Steven Carl Thompson and his wife, Renee of Sardis, Gary Wayne Thompson and his wife Jennifer,  of Batesville and three grandchildren, Scarlet Elizabeth Thompson, Russell Wayne Thompson and Reba Shaylynn Thompson.
