Green Wave struggles against St. Joe in non-district game

By Myra Bean

Carter Gant was a beast at the plate for North Delta in the junior varsity 10-1 win over Greenville St. Joe Saturday afternoon with a single, triple and a home run. However, the varsity team could not hold its own as it lost 9-4 in non-district action.

It looked promising in the beginning as the Green Wave took a 3-1 lead in bottom of the second inning, but St. Joe had a big four-run inning in the top of the third to retake the lead for good, 5-3. The Green Wave only managed one run in bottom of the third as Ethan Waldrip’s single drove home Hunter Durham from second. Durham singled and then stole second.

Luke Latham pitched a scoreless last inning and a third on the mound with one strikeout, one hit and one walk.

Pritchard scored the first run in the second on a Will Magee single after singling to get on base. Waldrip, who reached on an error, scored on a Chase Coker single. Magee scored on a Tyler Pirtle single.

This loss follows a district doubleheader between North Delta and Marshall Academy on Thursday. North Delta won the first game 2-0 with Skylar Lawson picking up the win on the mound. The Green Wave dropped the nightcap 1-0 with Waldrip taking the loss.

The Green Wave (10-10 overall, 3-3 district) lost the series to Marshall 2-1.

The Green Wave returns to district action this week with a series with Kirk Academy (13-2 overall, 5-1 district) starting tonight in Grenada at 4 with the junior varsity followed by the varsity at 6. The Green wave will host the district doubleheader Thursday at 4 and 6 p.m.
