Clarion-Ledger names All-State players

The Clarion-Ledger has selected three South Panola football players to their annual All-State team.

The Jackson based daily newspaper announced Sunday that Junior Antonio Conner is selected to the first team offense as an athlete.

Senior Dandy Dozen picks Temario Strong and Issac Gross were selected to the first team defense as defensive linemen.

Conner played in many positions for the Tigers this year including quarterback, running back, defensive back and special teams.

He had 1,472 yards rushing on 236 carries, 49 receiving yards on four receptions and 22 touchdowns, completed eight of 20 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. On defense he had 23 total tackles, 10 pass deflections, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.

On special teams, Conner had 14 punt returns for 200 yards and eight kickoff returns for 190 yards for a total of 390 yards.

Gross led the team in tackles with 65, including 31 tackles for loss yards. He also led the team with eight sacks. He had one interception and one pass deflection and scored one touchdown.

Strong was tied for second in tackles with 60, 13 for loss yards. He had four sacks, five pass deflections, caused two fumbles and scored two touchdowns.

The Clarion-Ledger All-State team selects players from all six class categories.

This year’s Mr. Football is Anthony Alford of Petal and the coach of the year is Olive Branch’s Scott Samsel.
