Pope battles with Water Valley

Pope hosted Water Valley Thursday night in junior high basketball action. Water Valley took three of four games.

The seventh grade Pope girls were the only winners from Pope 12-4. Qyara Love, Madalyn Hawthorne and Chassity Brooks scored four points each for the Lady Bulldogs.

7th Grade Boys
The seventh grade boys played a close games. The game was tied at six at halftime.

Water Valley scored five points in the third to take an 11-8 lead into the final quarter. Both only scored two points in the final quarter for the 13-10 Water Valley win.

Jamion Johnson led scoring for Pope with six points with Steven Collins and Draper Hughes, scoring two each.

8th Grade Girls

The Pope eighth grade girls still struggle on offense as the only points scored were by Breanna Bland who came in after playing the seventh grade game. Pope lost 29-4.

8th Grade Boys

The eighth grade boys lost their first game of the season 29-22 and dropped to 4-1 on the season.
Pope was shut out the first quarter 5-0 and trailed 15-4 at halftime. In the third quarter, Johnathan McMurry hit his stride and scored four of the team’s six points for a 21-12 score.

 Water Valley jumped to a 29-12 lead in the fourth quarter before McMurry scored eight straight points for Pope to pull within 29-20.

McMurry was the game’s high scorer with 14 points. Also scoring for Pope were Demetrius Market, four points, Stacy Chapman and Tyler Pogue, two points each.

Pope Schedule

Pope has adjusted its schedule. Monday, January 9, Pope will host Charleston beginning at 5 p.m. The Friday, January 20 game at Batesville Jr. High has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 19 at 5 p.m.
