South Panola Jr. Varsity’s Taylor Browning attempts to slide home, but North Delta Jr. High’s Anna Lloyd was waiting for her Wednesday afternoon. South Panola won the impromptu first game 3-1 but the teams tied 2-2 in the second games.

SP and ND play cross-county JV games

The South Panola Lady Tiger’s junior varsity fastpitch team hosted the North Delta Lady Green Wave’s junior high team in a cross-county double header Wednesday on a beautiful day.

The first game South Panola went to the Lady Tigers with a score of 3-1 and the second game tied 2-2.

On the mound for South Panola, Diamond Browning pitched the complete game in four innings. Peyton Rico and Grayson Sims shared the mound for North Delta.

In top of the first, Julianna Morrow drew a walk for North Delta. She later stole her way around the bags while Hastings Neal and Anna Loyd were at bat. Morrow scored the first and only run of the game for North Delta.

In bottom of the second inning, South Panola scored its three runs. Haley Reed drew a walk. Caroline Dickins got hit by a pitch. While Katie Hayes was at bat, Reed and Dickens stole third and second.

Hayes doubled driving Reed and Dickins home.

Destine Brandon drew a walk. While Crystal Contreras was at bat, Hayes stole third. Contreras doubled scoring Hayes for the third run.

In the second game, it was a battle to the end for both the Lady Tigers and the Lady Green Wave.

On the mound for South Panola was Dickins for the first three innings.

Jordan Pullen singled to center field to get the action going for North Delta in top of the second. While Maribeth Johns was at bat Pullen stole second.

Hannah Heafner doubled for North Delta, scoring Pullen who had stole third base.

Sims pitched for North Delta.

In top of the third, North Delta’s Katherine Rich singled and stole second and third bases.

With two outs on the board, Lloyd doubled driving Rich home to take a 2-0 lead.

Rico came to the mound in relief for the Lady Green Wave.

In bottom of the second, the Lady Tigers rallied with two outs.

Contreras drew a walk and then stole second while Marla Rudd was at the plate. Rudd also drew a walk.  Both stole bases while Diamond Browning was at bat

With Browning still at bat, Contreras scored on a squeeze play to give the Lady Tigers their first run of the game.

In top of the fourth, Nicole Fullilove went to the mound in relief  of Dickins.

The Lady Green Wave’s first out was a groundout to shortstop Reed who threw to first baseman Morgan. The next two batters went down in strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers rallied from behind in the bottom of the frame. Madison Taylor drew a walk. While Lindsey Calvert was at the plate, Taylor stole second and third. Calvert was out at first as Taylor tied the game.

South Panola Head Coach Ashleigh Hicks said, “It was two great games between both teams. It really wasn’t about winning but about getting the junior varsity some playing time.”

Several games had been scheduled but cancelled by other teams so Hicks wanted her team to get to play but she could only get junior varsity to play.

The Lady Tigers travel to Meridian today to play in the Clarkdale Tournament, near Meridian. Tonight, they will face Neshoba Central on Field 4 at 5 p.m. and Harrison Central on Field 3 at 8 p.m.

Saturday, March 19, they will play New Hope on Field 1 at 11:30 a.m. and Northwest Rankin on Field 2 at 2:30 p.m.
