SP Lady Tigers shut out Tupelo 6-0

After facing two shutout losses over spring break, the Lady Tigers rallied with a district shutout win over Tupelo 6-0 Monday night.

It was a win needed to turn things around after a disappointing weekend.

Senior pitcher Kenzi Reed stepped up to the mound and pitched a one-hitter striking out six Lady Golden Wave. Her biggest moment may have been in the bottom of the sixth when she slammed a two run homer to help her Lady Tigers get the victory. Reed also had nine assists in the game.

The first run came in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Hillari Plummer singled and stole her way home.

In the bottom of the second, catcher Kelsay Hancock singled. Next at bat was third baseman Meredith Roberson who singled sending Hancock all the way to third. While center fielder Jennifer

Newcomb was at bat, Roberson stole second. Newcomb grounded out to second and drove Hancock home for the run.

Right fielder Haley Walton hit a single RBI (run batted in) to drive Roberson home for the 3-0 lead.

“I want Aflac,” Lady Tiger head coach Ashleigh Hicks said going into the bottom of the sixth inning. “I want some insurance.”

The Lady Tigers delivered.

Second baseman Chelsea Allen hit a double to start the inning. First baseman Meri Morgan Fortune hit a single and Christa Brown came in as a courtesy runner.  With one out, Reed came to the plate and hit a three-run homer to put the Lady Tigers up 6-0.

Getting hits for the Lady Tigers were Hancock 3, Plummer, Allen, Reed and Walton, one each. Reed had two RBIs while Robison and Fortune each had one.

The defense held strong shutting down the Lady Golden Wave.

Unfortunately, the Lady Tigers did not keep the momentum going as they traveled to Senatobia Tuesday night and lost 7-1. South Panola ladies struck out 13 times.

Stormy Robison and Jennifer Newcomb had one hit each. Chelsea Allen had one RBI which scored Plummer.

Robison pitched the complete game and took the loss, fanning seven batters, allowing seven hits, one walk and two earned runs.

Tonight the Lady Tigers will host the Lady Yellow Jackets from Starkville in a district game. The junior varsity will start at 5 p.m. followed by varsity at 6.

Junior Varsity

The Lady Tigers junior varsity team defeated the Lady Golden Wave junior varsity 8-3 Monday. In the bottom of the second, third baseman Lindsey Calvert scored the first run. The junior Lady Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the third when left fielder Olivia Taylor hit a triple and center fielder Amanda Ivy hit a double bringing in Taylor for the second run.  Ivy stole third and then home while next batters were up, giving the Lady Tigers junior varsity a 3-0 lead. The Lady Golden Wave junior varsity came back and tied the game at three in the top of the fourth.

The Lady Tigers rallied and came out hitting in the the fourth. Second baseman Maryn McGee started led off with a single. Right fielder Crystal Contreras singled sending McGee to second. Madison Taylor came in as a courtesy runner for McGee and Taylor made her way home while Contreras stole third. Left fielder Olivia Taylor singled bringing in Contreras for a fifth run.

Centerfielder Amanda Ivy hit a two-run homer before short stop Paige Jordan was hit by the ball putting her at first. First baseman Lauren Calvert doubled sending Jordan home for the eighth run of the game.
