It’s a clean sweep for Panola County teams

It was again a clean sweep for all three Panola County teams in Friday night football action. All three teams were on the road for district matches.

South Panola
The big game of the night across the state was the No. 1 South Panola Tigers vs. No. 5 Olive Branch Conquistadors. The crowd was estimated between 12,000 and 15,000 fans on hand.

South Panola won a nailbiter 21-13. Senior linebacker Marvin Burdette recovered an Olive Branch fumble late in the fourth quarter as OB was threatening to score from the Tiger 32. A touchdown and two-point conversion would have tied the game as OB was successful in holding SP scoreless in the fourth quarter. South Panola’s win streak stands at 81.

Nick Parker scored two touchdowns, two one-yard runs and had 169 yards. Nick Brassell had the 17-yard pass from David Renfroe.

North Delta

North Delta’s defeat of Delta Academy 34-24 kept the Green Wave’s playoff hopes alive. North Delta had to play a come-from-behind game to defeat the Raiders. The Raiders led 18-14 at halftime.

North Delta took the lead with just over five minutes left in the game.

North Panola
North Panola showcased a Quin Ellis to Ricky Hunt connection for two touchdowns in double and triple coverage to take a 30-7 district win over the Lewisburg Patriots at the Patriots’ homecoming tonight.

Ellis found Hunt on touchdown passes of 56 and 36 in the third quarter tonight. In both instances, Ellis was flushed from the pocket and had to throw on the run. Hunt’s vertical leap helped him get over the double and triple team of defenders and come down on his back foot. Hunt was able to right himself and run for the scores.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Tyrus Mack on a 20-yard run and Vernon Lewis on a 16-yard run.
