James Henry Armstrong Jr.

GLEN–James Henry Armstrong Jr., 45, died Friday, August 15, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Services were Sunday, August 17 at Magnolia Funeral Home in Corinth. Brother Ted Advant officiated. Burial was in Henry Cemetery. Magnolia Funeral Home in Corinth had charge.

Armstrong, born Sept. 19, 1962, in Walsh County, to Ruthie A. Armstrong Skeen of Batesville and the late James H. Armstrong Sr., was a welder.

Survivors along with his mother include: one brother, Bobby G. Armstrong of Batesville; two sisters, Cathy A. Bishop and Brenda J. Welsch, both of Batesville; one brother, Charlie W. Armstrong of Batesville; his wife, Cyndi Armstrong of Corinth; two sons, James M. Armstrong and Justin L. Armstrong, both of Corinth; two step-sons, Jessie Kyle and Scott Kyle, both of Corinth and one step-daughter, Shari D. Kyle of Corinth.


Agnes Erna Sorek Billingsley

BATESVILLE–Agnes Erna Sorek Billingsley, 78, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at her residence.

Services are today at 11 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Fred Perrow will officiate. Visitation is today 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Billingsley, born Dec. 3, 1929, to the late Andreas and Marie Sorek in Poland, was a member of Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Past Matron. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include: her husband, Oscar Hiram Billingsley of Batesville; one daughter, Mellie Billingsley of Vicksburg; two brothers, Helmut Sorek of Germany and Siegfried Sorek, of Berlin, Germany.

Ranger “Raymond” Davis

BATESVILLE–Ranger “Raymond” Davis, 52, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services are Sunday at 3 p.m. at Spring Hill Asa M.B. Church in Courtland. Rev. Otha Coffey will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Davis, born Feb. 26, 1956, to Robert Coleman of Batesville and Eva Mae Davis Coleman of Batesville, was a member of Springhill Asa M.B. Church and a machine operator for Muscle Shoals Rubber Company.

Survivors along with his parents include: his wife, Ethel Davis of Batesville; two daughters, ShaQuita Davis and Shaquna Davis, both of Batesville; two sons, Randall Young and Gearmee Davis, both of Batesville; one sister, Mattie Mae Coleman of Memphis and 8 grandchildren.


William Arvin “Bill” Hawkins

BATESVILLE–William Arvin “Bill” Hawkins, 83, died Monday, August 25, 2008, at the Mississippi Sate Veteran’s Home in Oxford.

Services were Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Pisgah Cemetery in Courtland. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Hawkins, born Feb. 23, 1925, in Courtland, to the late Barton Hawkins and Leacy Marberry Hawkins, was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Pope. He was a cableman for Western Electric Company and a veteran who served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

Survivors include: his wife, Bonnie Shipp Anderson Hawkins of Batesville; one daughter, Mary Ellen Hawkins Curry of Beachwood, N.J.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Verneas Houston

POPE–Verneas Houston, 84, died Friday, August 22, 2008, at her residence.

Services are Saturday at noon at Nelson Chapel M.B. Church in Pope. Rev. Fred Butts will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is today 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home. Henderson Funeral Home has charge.

Houston, born Feb. 2, 1924, to the late Jessie Houston and the late Hattie R. Melcalf, was a member of Nelson Chapel M.B. Church and a domestic worker.

Survivors include: one sister, Willeva Stokes of Crowder and one brother, Joe Lewis Houston of Pope.

Milton “Jack” Stokes

SARDIS– Milton “Jack” Stokes, 79, died Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Services were Tuesday at Eddie Robinson Funeral Home. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery in Como. Robert “Sonny” Smith Jr. officiated. Eddie Robinson Funeral Home had charge.

Stokes, born June 14, 1929, was known to many as “Jack the Lawnmower Man.” He was a farmer and a lawn mower repairman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Mae Stokes.

Georgia Ann Simpson Thomas

COURTLAND– Georgia Ann Simpson Thomas, 69, died Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Rev. Zannie Leland will officiate. Burial will be in Batesville Cemetery. Visitation is today 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Thomas, born Dec. 9, 1938, in Batesville, to the late Robert J. Simpson Sr. and the late Ollie Johnson, was a member of Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include: her husband, Essell Thomas of Courtland; two daughters, Loretta Simpson of Courtland and Barbara Walls of Southaven; one step-daughter, Peggy Parker of Batesville; six sons, David Earl Simpson of Courtland, Tony Simpson of Houston, Texas, Jay Simpson of Chicago, Robert Lee Simpson of Dayton, Ohio, Mark Edward Simpson of North Fork, Va. and Al Rosen Simpson of Boston; one step-son, Sam Parker of Courtland; one brother, Eddie Berryhill of Baton Rouge; 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
