Tigers bounce back after district loss

By Brad Greer
The lack of timely hitting proved costly for South Panola Tuesday night as the Tigers stranded 12 runners on base in a 9-5 Region 2-6A loss at Tupelo.
South Panola saw its record fall to 7-8 and 0-2 in district play while the Golden Wave improved 7-9 overall and 2-0 in district, a half-game behind conference leading Hernando who the Tigers will visit tonight beginning at 5 p.m with the junior varsity contest.
Leading 5-4 heading into the home half of the sixth inning, Tupelo blew the game open with four runs on two hits as Charlie Greer’s double down the left field produced one run before Josh Smith added a RBI groundout to tack on the final run of the frame.
South Panola added a run in the seventh on a two-out bases loaded walk by Cole Rotenberry that forced in Zach Hopper who had led off the inning with a single. The Tigers left a runner on  in every inning including the bases loaded in the first and seventh inning and two in the sixth after having a runner caught stealing at second.
Tupelo broke a 4-4 deadlock in the fifth as Smith singled and later scored on a two-out error, one of three committed by South Panola on the night. Another error in the second led to a pair of unearned runs andgave the Golden Wave a 3-0 cushion.
South Panola began to chip away Tupelo’s lead as Hopper led off the fourth with a double then later scored on a Noah Willis single with two outs. The Tigers tied the game in the following inning with three runs as Turner Rotenberry and Hopper provided singles.
Hopper led South Panola at the plate with a double and two singles while Willis registered two singles. Cole Rotenberry and Chase Durham also singled at the dish.
Turner Rotenberry took the loss on the mound despite giving up only two earned runs in 5.2 innings. The senior right-hander struck out four and walked four while surrendering six hits. Nathan Herron came on in the sixth to retire a batter.
 South Panola -13 Winona-3
(six innings)
The Tigers bounced back with a road win over Winona Friday afternoon to sweep a two-game season series.
Mason Wilkerson, Turner Rotenberry, Hopper and Durham drove in two runs each as South Panola jumped out to a 8-0 lead after three innings. Cole Rotenberry added three singles and scored two runs while Tripp Still and Jacob Fennel drove in a run with singles. Kyle Weaver chipped in with a double. Wilkerson also had a double to go along with two singles.
Anderson Wilder tossed five innings on the mound to pick up the victory. The sophomore scattered six hits while giving up two earned runs while walking one and fanning three. Luke Daniels got the nod and pitched one inning, striking out two and giving up two hits.
