ND falls to Kirk Academy

By Will Dickins
The North Delta baseball team traveled to Grenada to face Kirk Academy Tuesday night and lost the Junior Varsity game 7-3 and the Varsity game 15-8.
Kirk Academy 15, ND 8
The Green Wave fell in a hole (5-0) early on, but began to scratch their way back into the game in the third inning with Coach Andrew Haygood preaching, “There is a lot of time left in this game”. He was right.
In the third inning, Cole Devazier scored when he stole home after being walked.  With the score at 5-1, Kirk Academy scored two more runs in the bottom of the third.
“There is a lot of time left in this game.”
Down 7-1, North Delta needed momentum.  Hunter Baker led off the inning with a double.  Hayden Hankins then walked. Zach Adams hit a groundout to the first baseman to score Baker, and Ethan Calvert had an RBI single to bring the score to 7-3.  Kirk Academy was held scoreless in the inning.
“There is a lot of time left in this game”.  The Green Wave kept scratching away in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle from Baker after Tyler Holland also singled.  Baker later scored on a passed ball. Kirk Academy scored only one in the bottom half of the inning. The score was 8-5.
With Haygood still preaching in front of the dugout, North Delta needed a big inning.  Time was running out. Ethan Calvert started it off with a bang when he slapped it to the centerfield wall for a double. Cole Devazier followed up with a single.  Jones Montgomery hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but broke up the double play.  He stole second to bring runners at second and third with one out for Bailey Ross who drew a walk to load the bases.
Calvert scored on a passed ball and Holland took advantage with a sacrifice fly to right field for an RBI (8-7).
Baker stood in the box and watched Ross score on a passed ball to tie the game at 8-8.  Baker walked but nothing else would happen in the inning.
“There is a lot of time left in this game”.  The amazing comeback was achieved.  Momentum was behind the Green Wave.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Kirk Academy raiders crashed the party.  They scored seven runs on four hits to bring the score to 15-8.
North Delta found themselves in a similar place down by seven.  “One thing we will not do is quit,” Haygood said.  They did not quit, but there was not enough left in the tank.  A runner would get to third but that would be all as an exciting comeback was raided.  The final score was 15-8.
Calvert (3 for 4) had a hot bat all night and ended with: three total hits, one double, two singles, scored once, and had one RBI.
Other batters with hits were: Holland (1-3), one single, one run, and one RBI; Baker (2-3), one double, one single, one walk, two runs, and one RBI; Adams (1-3), one single, one walk,  and one RBI; and Devazier 1-2), one single, two walks, and one run.

North Delta started off with an early 1-0 lead with Luke Noah scoring on a passed ball after hitting a single earlier in the inning.  Kirk Academy started their hot streak with four runs in the first inning on three hits to put the game at 4-1.
The Green Wave surged back in the second with two runs.  Drake Barton and Caleb Tutor scored with two outs on an error from the third baseman and a passed ball by the catcher.  Kirk Academy would find a way again to score two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 6-3.
North Delta could not do much afterwards and were held scoreless while Kirk would score one more to end the game with the score of 7-3.
North Delta had three hits. Noah, Ian Cole, and Nathan Walls all went 1-2 with a single.
