Hattie B. Gumbus
DARLING––Hattie B. Gumbus, 96, wife of the late Ananias Gumbus, Sr died Thursday, August 20, 2015.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, August 29, 2015 at noon at Mt. Zion M.B. in Sledge, pastored by Rev. Mark Connor.

Gumbus, born September 3, 1918 in Marks, to the late Rev. and Nellie Brooks, attended Rust College in Holly Springs, where she received a Bachelor’s of Science in Early Childhood Education.  She taught in the Quitman County School District for over 30 years before retiring in May 1981.

  She was preceded in death by one daughter, Emma J. McClendon.

Survivors include: her son, Ananias Gumbus, Jr. of Memphis; one sister, Evangelist Ann Houston of Chicago; five grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 23 great great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Marks Burial in Marks.

Jessie Hill
COMO––Jessie Hill, 74, died Saturday, August 22, 2015, at his residence.

A native of Como, he was the son of George Hill and Clara Bobo Hill. He was a member of Simon Chapel # 2 MB Church in Sardis. He was a retired forklift driver.

Services will be held Sunday at 11:00 a.m., August 30, 2015, at Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Clifton Ward will officiate. Burial will be in Simon Chapel # 2 Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Saturday, August 29, 2015,  from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc had charge.

Survivors include: two sisters, Annie Gipson of Sardis and Bobbie Hill of Chicago; five brothers, Roosevelt Hill and Johnnie Hill both of Como, George Hill of California, Jessie Lee Hill of Fort Worth, Texas and Johnny Hill of Chicago.

Cowles “Pete” Horton III
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.–Graveside services for Cowles “Pete” Horton III, 66, formerly of Batesville, were Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Roselawn Cemetery in Athens, Ala. Ronald Williams officiated.

Memorial services were held prior at McConnell Memorial Chapel in Athens.
Horton passed away August 23 at his residence.

He was born June 7, 1949 in Colbert County, Ala. to the late Cowles Horton, Jr. and Louise Hatch Horton of Batesville.

Horton was a retired business owner of Muscle Shoals Rubber Company in Batesville. He was a former Batesville  alderman and fire chief, associate instructor for the Mississippi Fire Academy, and member of Jaycees. He graduated from Sheffield High in 1968 and graduated from Christian Brothers College.

Horton is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Kenneth Horton.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Williams Horton, of Huntsville; two sons, Cowles Horton IV of Batesville and Sam Horton of Huntsville; two stepsons Paul Albert Brown of Brenham, Tex. and John Ency Brown of Lexington, S.C.; one sister, Susan Horton Gray of Dunwoody, Ga.; three grandchildren and five step grandchildren.

Lynn Ann Jenkins
OXFORD––Lynn Ann Jenkins, 68, died Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

There are no plans for a funeral service. Coleman Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Born in Memphis to the late  H.R. “Pop” and Louise Gardner, she a retired manager with the Mr. Jiffy Store/Quickstop.

Survivors include: her daughter, Sheila Bishop of Oxford; one son, David Scott McLarty of Oxford; two sisters, Kaye Palm of Ala. and Sherry Young of Oxford and one granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to the Oxford Lafayette County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1674, Oxford, MS 38655.

Roy Kuykendoll
BATESVILLE––Roy Kukendoll, 60, died Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive M.B. Church. Burial will be in New Bethlehem M.B. Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held today 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at St. Paul U.M. Church. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Kuykendoll, born Jan. 26, 1955, in Batesville, to the late Lawrence “Bo” Kuykendoll Jr. and Dora Lee Young, was an auto mechanic. He was a member of St. Paul U.M. Church and the National Guard.

Survivors include: one son, Pastor Corey Jerome Battle of Batesville; two daughters, Veltis Walton of Batesville and Loretta Kuykendoll; one sister, Loretta Kuykendoll and eight grandchildren.

Bunnie Mae Patton
 BATESVILLE––Bunnie Mae Patton, 103, died Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Golden Living Center.

Services were held Saturday at Henderson Funeral Home in Sardis. Burial was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home had charge.

Survivors include: one son, Willie Patton of Batesville; one grandson, Barry Patton of Inkster, Mich. and granddaughter, Patrice Patton of Westland, Mich.
