Errors hurt North Delta in own tourney

The North Delta fastball softball squad finished off the pre-season portion of its schedule by posting a 2-2 record in the North Delta Summer Classic held Friday and Saturday at Trussell Park.

The Lady Green Wave (6-4) opened up pool play in the seven-team event Friday with a 4-2 loss to Marshall before rebounding with a pair of victories over Tunica and Greenville Christian Saturday morning. North Delta moved to the single elimination round where they lost 3-0 to Bayou.

Marshall-4 North Delta-2 (5 inns.)

Two Green Wave errors led to three unearned runs in Marshall’s victory over North Delta. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Kat Moore led off with a bunt single then advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a fielders choice. Marshall would add another run later in the inning on a bases loaded walk.

Marshall extended its lead to 4-0 in the third on a two-run double before North Delta trimmed the margin in half with a pair of runs in the fourth. Myles Durham got the inning started by getting hit by a pitch. Caroline Dickins followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. After a ground out and strike out, Hailey Lamm  blooped a double down the left field line to score both runners.

After Anna Lloyd singled in the fifth, North Delta had the tying run at the plate before the game was halted due to a one-hour time limit. Mary Margaret Pearson added a third inning single for the Lady Waves. Sarah Johnson and Dickins pitched two innings each in the circle.

North Delta-7, Tunica-4 

(4 innings)

A  six-run second inning lifted North Delta to a win over the Blue Devils Saturday morning. Lloyd doubled and singled to pace the Waves offensively while Maribeth Johns singled and scored two runs.

Johnson, Dickins and Ginger Stevens singled and scored in the second as North Delta sent 10 batters to the plate. Pearson also drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt in the frame.

North Delta- 7 

Greenville Christian-1 

( 4 innings)

  The Lady Wave ended pool play with a 2-1 victory over the Saints. North Delta scored three runs in both the first and fourth innings to win going away. Dickins surrendered one hit while fanning five in three innings to record the pitching win.

Stevens, Lamm, Dickins, Durham and Madeline Ray registered singles while Lloyd and Taylor Barton scored two runs. Pinch-runner Amanda Lamb got North Delta on the board with a first inning run following a throwing error.

Bayou- 3 North Delta-0 

(4 inns)

  Missed opportunities led to North Delta’s downfall as the Lady Colts broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the fourth to advance into the semi-finals.

The Lady Waves stranded seven runners including a bases loaded second inning and second and third with no outs in the following frame. Pearson, Stevens and Durham collected singles for North Delta.

Dickins gave up three unearned runs on four hits while striking out six in four innings.

North Delta hosts Winona in a District 1-AA matchup today at 5 p.m.
