By Brad Greer

Two teams looking to pick up their first victory of the season meet tonight as North Delta hosts Strayhorn in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Green Wave Field.

Strayhorn (0-2) opened the season with a 22-20 loss to Coldwater before falling hard to Clarksdale Lee 34-0 last week.

The Mustangs, who compete in Region 2-2A, are coached by Tim Beard who led North Delta to the AAA State Championship in 1994. Former Green Wave head coach Rick Johnston also serves as Strayhorn’s defensive coordinator.

North Delta meanwhile is coming off a 35-6 loss at the hands of Magnolia Heights last week in Senatobia . The Green Wave trailed 14-6 at halftime only to be held scoreless in the second half.

Chase Coker accounted for the lone North Delta touchdown with a two-yard scoring run in the second quarter. The junior tailback was the team’s leading ground gainer with 69 yards on 12 carries.

Sophomore linebacker Hunter Baker led the defensive charge for North Delta with eight tackles while junior safety Hays Hudson registered a fumble recovery and interception to go along with six tackles. Hudson also completed one pass for 11 yards.

Strayhorn meanwhile is coming off a 9-3 record in 2012 that saw them make the playoffs for the first time in the school’s four-year football history.

Junior quarterback Brandon Kilpatrick guides the Mustang offense along with sophomore Tyler Stovall. Junior running back/linebacker Cortez Davis and Deairous Cathey round out the Strayhorn backfield.

Mason Overall and Chris West lead the receiving corps for the Mustangs. The offensive line will include Nick Stafford and Morgan Montgomery along with Matthew Lewallen at center.
