Carl Black

SARDIS – Carl Black, age 77, died Monday, April 29, 2013 in Methodist University Hospital, Memphis.
Memorial services will be Friday, May 24, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Henderson Fiesta Banquet Room, Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was born to Lena Evans and William Black, Sr., in Carney, Okla. on December 10, 1935. He was a retired contractor.

Survivors include: his four chidren, Lynn Ray of Sardis, Joyce Newsom, Karen Black both of Las Vegas and Vicki Liddicoat of Georgetown, Calif.; five sisters, Barbara Berry of Round Rock, Texas, Louise Gutierrez of Oakley, Calif., Mary Russell, Margaret Murley-Feridi and Kathy Lynch, all of Las Vegas; two brothers, Bill Black Jr of Aurora, Nev. and Donald Murley of Pleaston, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Sim H. Black

DETROIT, Mich. – Sim H. Black, 67, formerly of Sardis, died Friday, May 10, 2013.

Services were held Wednesday, May 22, at Calvary Longview United Methodist Church in Memphis. Burial was in Mt. Level Church Cemetery in Como. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home had charge.
He was retired from Ford Motor Company.

Survivors include: one daughter, Bryanna Black of Detroit; five sisters, Theresa B. Ellison of Olive Branch, Doloris B. Woodard of Water Valley, Lynda B. Black, Elvera Walton and Freddie Conrad, all of Memphis and four brothers, James D. Black and Michael S. Black of Memphis, Robert Black of Detroit and Johnnie Cooper.

Betty Daniel Brown

GRENADA – Betty Daniel Brown, 76, died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Grenada Lake Medical Center in Grenada.
Services were held Monday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles Locke presiding.
Ms. Brown was born in Webster County, Mississippi on May 3, 1937 to S.V. and Minnie Millsap Daniel. She was a homemaker and a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

Betty leaves a son, Ronald Brown of Grenada and her sister, Sarah Daniel Ford of Coldwater.

Jack A. Cobb

BATESVILLE- Jack A. Cobb, 56, husband of Judge Vicki Beardain Cobb, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Memorial services were held Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Batesville with Rev. Ed Temple, Rev. Pat Ludlam and Rev. Willie Frost officiating. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Jack was born on January 13, 1957 in Lambert, to Jasper Darrell and Flora May Atkinson Cobb. He was a 1975 graduate of Delta Academy, Marks. In 2009 Jack graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. He was a self employeed contractor who also worked many years as a farm manager.

Survivors include: his wife, Vicki Beardain Cobb of Batesville; daughter,  Erica Cobb Garrett (Matthew) of Dundee; four sons, Jacob Cobb (Jessica) of Batesville, Jasper Cobb (Nicole) of Starkville, Forrest Wilbanks (Victoria) of Batesville and Rush Wilbanks (Ashley) of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Jean Cobb Mixon (Charles) of Suches, Ga.; one brother, Larry Cobb (Kay) of Oxford; his granddaughter, Haven Dawn Wilbanks of Batesville and his mother, Flora May Atkinson Cobb of Oxford.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jasper Darrell Cobb and one brother, Percy Rex Cobb.

Russell Fondren

BATESVILLE –  Russell Fondren, 53, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Airport Inn in Memphis.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Concord M.B. Church. Pastor Winford Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from noon – 6 p.m. at Eddie Robinson Funeral Home.

Fondren was born September 13, 1959 in Batesville to George Fondren and Everlena Mitchell Fondren.  He was an auto mechanic for Auto Plex of Memphis. He was a member of Blacks Chapel M.B. Church in Sardis.

Survivors include two daughters, Latisha Cotton of Washington, D.C. and Di’Erra E. Fondren of Calif.; three sons, Hosie Cotton of Sledge, Terrance Cotton of Memphis and Izell Townsend of Batesville; three sisters, Mary Fondren of Batesville, Barbara Parham of Greenville and Emma Lee Stewart of Lakewell, Fla.; four brothers, George Fondren Jr. of Batesville, Jack Fondren and David Fondren, both of Memphis, and Michael Fondren of Bay St. Louis and 13 grandchildren.

Mark Edward Johnson

BATESVILLE – Mark Edward Johnson, 52, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at his residence.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Batesville. Pastor Rubert Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in Batesville Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Johnson, born Sept. 27, 1960, to Joe Louis Hankins of Batesville and the late Lottie Ruth Lloyd Johnson Dugger, was a member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church and graduated from South Panola High School.

Survivors along with his father include: his wife, Georgia Johnson; two sons, Marcus Pollard of Southaven and Charles A. Ford of Batesville; two daughters, Rosheedha Benson of Batesville and Shana Ford of Hattiesburg;  his step-father who raised him, Earl Nub Johnson; nine brothers, Joe L. Hankins of Atlanta, Hubert Mitchell and Hughbyron Mosley, both of Oxford, James T. Mosley, Fred Mosley and Lyndon Mosley, all of Batesville, Darrell Hankins and Bruce Johnson, both of Pope and Earnest Mosley of San Antonio and four sisters, Charlotte Hankins of Pope, Ella Meeks of Memphis, Brenda Hankins of San Antonio and Jackie Robinson of Sardis and four grandchildren.

Sarah Lindley Roberts

CHARLESTON –  Sarah Lindley Roberts, 77, died Sunday, May 13, 2013.

Services were held Thursday, May 16 at Newsom Funeral Home. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge.

Roberts, born to the late, George and Bertice McGarrity Lindley, was a beautician and a member of Pine Hill Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Dwain Roberts and one son, Danny Roberts.

Survivors include: one daughter, Sharon Roberts Henry of Batesville; two sons, Ronny Dwain Roberts of Oakland and Barry Roberts of Batesville; two sisters, Juanita Allen of Oakland and Estelle Barefoot of Charleston; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Batesville Humane Society.
