C. W. Harris

BATESVILLE – C.W. Harris, 67, died Monday, October 22, 2012, at Northwest Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale.

Services will be held Saturday, October 27, at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel with burial in Shiloh C.M.E. Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.  Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Harris was born in Sardis to W.C. Harris and Earnestine Salter Harris. He was a farmer.

Survivors include one son, Charles Wilson of Sardis; one sister, Mattie Harris, Batesville and three brothers, Richard Harris and Henry Harris, both of Batesville and David Smalls of Memphis.

Monetha Louise Hunter

BATESVILLE – Monetha Louise Hunter, 80, died Monday, October 22, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Friday, October 26, at 11 a.m. at Prince of Peace M.B. Church in St. Louis with burial in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Hunter was born July 31, 1932, in St. Louis, Mo. to Robert Willie Hunter and Easter Harrison.  She was a retired business owner of McCrary’s Barbeque and member of Prince of Peace M.B. Church of St. Louis.

Survivors include her daughter, Lisa E. Taylor of Batesville.

Frank T. Hudson Jr.


SARDIS — Frank T. Hudson Jr., 74, died Monday, October 22, 2012, at his residence.  

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Troy Darby officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday. Interment will be held at a later date in the West Tennessee Veterans Memorial  Cemetery in Memphis.

Hudson was born in Memphis, on July 12, 1938, to the late Mary Kathryn Teas and Frank Tindall Hudson Sr. Before retirement, Hudson worked in the restaurant and food service industry. He served the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

Survivors include: three daughters, Tammy Hudson Cooper of Lakeland, Tenn., Shelia Hudson Acerra of Memphis, Cheryl Hudson Babb of Olive Branch; three grandchildren; one great granddchild, five sisters, Lisa K. Oliver of Gautier, Rita C. Walls of Ocean Springs, Becky Millea of Byhalia, Elaine Beard of Eads, Tenn., Sue Mauney of Searcy, five brothers, William E. Hudson of Gautier, John Boyuka Jr., of Holly Springs, Richard McKnight of Senatobia, Gary Wayne Hudson of Gautier, William Davis and Sammy Wilson of Batesville.

Velma K. James

BATESVILLE – Velma K. James, 77, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Concord M.B. Church. Louis Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Concord M.B. Church.

James, born Sept. 23, 1935, in Batesville, to the late Nolton Kuykendall and Eula Dunn Kuykendall, was a retired factory worker and a member of Antioch M.B. Church in Courtland.

Survivors include: her husband, John Robert James of Batesville; three daughters, Sharon Nash of Batesville, Shelia James and Vivian S. Heard, both of Dallas; two sons, Joe James and Michael James, both of Batesville; one sister, Carnelia Kuykendall of Memphis; one brother, Waverly Kuykendall of Memphis; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mattie M. Johnson

BATESVILLE – Ms. Mattie M. Johnson, 89, died Friday, October 19, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Friday, October 26, at 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel with burial in Concord Cemetery in Batesville. Pastor Zannie Leland, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday, Ocotber 26 from noon – 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Johnson was born August 1, 1923 in Batesville, to Edgie Hudson and Nina Bell Wilson Hudson.  She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Zion M.B. Church in Batesville.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Frazier of Detroit, ; three sons, Earnest Johnson, Jr. and James Johnson, both of Batesville and Eugene Clark of Portland; her granddaughter who cared for her, April Lantern of Batesville; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Moore

JEFFERSON, Ga. – Virgil Moore, 77, formerly of Sardis, died Monday, October 22, 2012.

Memorial services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Galilee Christian Church with Tom Plank officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. prior to the service. Evans Funeral Home in Jefferson, Ga. has charge of arrangements.

Moore, born to the late Ben H. and Luxora Pearl Caldwell Moore, was an insurance agent and a member of Galilee Christian Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dr. Ben Moore, Jolly Mack Moore, Ray Moore and his sister, Bessie Moore of Batesville.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorothy Walton Moore of Jefferson; his children, Leslie Moore of Athens, Virgil “Chip” Moore Jr. of Canyon, Texas, Sandra Moore of Athens, Tim Moore of Auburn; one brother, E. Don Moore of Jackson; grandchildren, Daniel Cohen, Joseph Cohen, Dustyn Moore, Brady Moore Murrell, Kelcy Moore, Timothy Moore Jr., Matthew Moore, Jesse Moore and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Gaililee Christian Church Building Fund, 2191 Galilee Church Road, Jefferson, Ga. 30549.

Mildred V. Nelson Young

BATESVILLE – Mildred V. Nelson Young, 91, widow of Rev. Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Young, died Monday, October 22, 2012, at Golden Living Nursing Facility.

Services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Dr. Tommy Snyder officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Young born in Courtland, on August 12, 1921, to the late John Thomas and Evelyn Bradford Nelson, was a housewife and a teacher’s assistant. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Batesville where she was a member of the “Willing Workers” Sunday School Class.

Survivors include four daughters, Charlotte Christenberry of Terrell, Texas, Linda Dye of Batesville, Vicki Crawley of Pontotoc and Lisa Bennett of Bruce; three sons, James Young of Tuscaloosa, David Young of Foxworth and Ronnie Young of Houma, La., 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.

Alma Jean Renfro

Southaven — Alma Jean Renfro, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 24. She was born Feb. 2, 1936, to James and Doanie May. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Norman Renfro, two daughters, Carole Giaroli of Tueplo, and Pat Haire of Sarasota, Fla.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Dickins Funeral Home in Batesville, with services at noon. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery in Batesville. Dickins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
