City judge sends three to grand jury

Judge Bill McKenzie referred three defendants to the grand jury during Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday.

Brandon Taylor, 111 Jackson, Batesville, had a bond of $5,000 set for possession of a weapon by a felon and was referred to the grand jury.

Vanessa Griffin, 475 Greenbriar, Courtland, had a felony domestic violence case referred to the grand jury and her bond is $5,000.

Antonio T. Johnson, 176 Otto Sanford, Courtland, had his bond set at $5,000 and was referred to the grand jury for felony fleeing, resisting arrest, improper passing (x4), running a stop sign (x3), no seat belt, reckless driving and no driver’s license.

Jeremy Mathews, 117 Broad, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to dog at large and was fined $27.

As the judge read over the affidavit he said, “It looks like someone was bit?”

Mathews said, “Yes sir, he has a different place to go.”

“I am so sorry. I didn’t know he was like that. I have a child and if I thought he was that way I would have never kept him at my house.”

The judge told the victim who had been bitten that the medical expenses would be a civil claim and that would go through another court system.

Jennifer Denley, 304 Woodruff, Courtland, entered a not guilty plea to open container. A trial was set for October 10.

Lisa R. Smith, 208 Brinkley Lane, Batesville, entered a guilty plea to leaving the scene of an accident. She was fined $209.

Tabitha Thornton, 209 Gordon Dr., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to disorderly conduct-interfere with a business. A trial was set for October 3.
She also had old fines of $117 that have been due since July. The judge told her to have the fines paid by her next court date or serve time in jail.

Gay Johnson, 328 Hays St., Batesville, has a trial for simple assault on September 19.

Parish Fondren, 237 MLK, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to simple assault. A trial was set for October 10.

Gary Douglas, 107 Dora St., Batesville, entered not guilty plea to simple assault by threat. A trial was set for October 17.

Jay Sanderford, 48 Sleepy Creek, Pope, entered a not guilty plea to petit larceny along with Jack Wilkinson, 42 Ronzel Dr., Batesville, for petit larceny by taking tools from affiant Indu Vaghela.
Wilkinson said he was working for Vaghela and still is.
A trial was set for October 24.

Kari White, 1886 Hambrick, Boaz, Ala., failed to appear to answer a shoplifting charge. Al Williams Bonding was notified.

Jerrell Lantern, 214 W Lee St., Sardis, paid his old fines of $537  that have been due since 2008.

Briam Comer, 214 Hays, Batesville, returned with an attorney announcement for DUI, driving while license suspended and expired tag.

“You tell your lawyer to contact the court,” said McKenzie.
A trial was set for October 31.

Tickets

Rhonda K. Hutchins, 3827 Springport Rd., Sardis, was given the lower fine of $205 for no proof of insurance after she proved she purchased insurance after the ticket was issued.

Jessica R. Busam, 1408 Hwy. 9 North, Bruce, was given a lower fine of $205 for no proof of insurance.

Clara D. Hardrick, 219 Vance, Batesville, was fined $205 for no proof of insurance.
